OBJECTIVE The aim of this work is to make a narrative re- view of the medical literature in relation to the epidemiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of the most frequent cervicova- ginal infections in women. MATERIAL AND METHODS An internet search was performed on the fo- llowing platforms: Medline, Ebsco, PubMed, SciELO, and Google Scholar for qualitative and quantitative review articles in English and Spanish with the following keywords: vaginal infections, bacterial vaginosis, candidiasis, tri- chomoniasis, cervicitis and vulvitis. The informa- tion was independently analyzed by the authors. RESULTS A total of 27 articles were included, the search was limited to full texts, review articles, and original articles published in the last 10 years. Those articles that, due to their relevance, were considered as referents on the subject, regard- less of the date of their publication, were inclu- ded. The results were classified by themes and subthemes. CONCLUSIONS Vaginal infections are a common pathology throughout a woman’s life. The causes are di- verse and affect the woman’s quality of life, her emotional status and her Laboral performance. The clinical presentation is diverse. Diagnosis and treatment depend on the etiological agent. Bacterial vaginosis is the most common and is caused by an imbalance in the vaginal micro- biota.
